Green, watery, and gently honeyed. Like leaning over a cucumber vine in a morning garden -- the tiny yellow flowers are barely visible, but they add a subtle, sweet-pollen quality to the cool, green cucumber air. Lighter and more floral than the fruit.

The Full Story
Cucumber flower (Cucumis sativus) is the small, star-shaped yellow flower of the cucumber vine. The flowers have a faint, delicate scent that combines the green, watery character of cucumber with a light, honeyed-floral sweetness.
The cucumber element comes from the same aldehydes that give the fruit its characteristic freshness, particularly (E,Z)-2,6-nonadienal (the defining cucumber molecule). The floral element adds a gentle, pollen-like sweetness that is absent from the fruit itself.
In perfumery, cucumber flower is a fantasy accord -- the flowers are too small and too faintly scented for commercial extraction. Perfumers reconstruct it using cucumber-green materials (nonadienals, violet leaf fractions), a light honeyed-floral element, and green-leaf notes.
The note sits in the top notes, providing a delicate, garden-fresh quality that is lighter and more floral than plain cucumber.

The molecule primarily responsible for cucumber smell, (E,Z)-2,6-nonadienal, has one of the lowest odor detection thresholds of any food volatile -- humans can detect it at concentrations as low as 0.01 ppb, making it roughly 1,000 times more potent than most fruit aromas.
