Scent

Light, sweet, creamy-floral with a tropical-green edge. Not coconut flesh (no lactonic heaviness) but the flower -- airier, greener, more nectared. Lighter than frangipani, less heavy than ylang, with a particular palm-tropical quality. Think of the inflorescence before it becomes fruit.

The Full Story

Coconut blossom refers to the flower of the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) -- the inflorescence whose sap is collected for palm sugar and toddy. The flower itself has a light, sweet, faintly creamy-floral aroma quite different from coconut flesh (which is lactonic-fatty). The blossom is greener, lighter, and more floral.

No commercial coconut blossom essential oil exists. The note is reconstructed as a tropical-floral fantasy: light creamy-floral (linalool, hedione), a touch of green-tropical (palm frond impression), and a faint honey-nectar sweetness (phenylacetic acid) without the heavy gamma-octalactone creaminess of coconut flesh.

Functionally, coconut blossom works as a light tropical-floral heart note. It provides coconut association without coconut's heaviness -- the tree rather than the fruit. Works in tropical, light-floral, and exotic compositions.

Did You Know?

Did you know?
A single coconut palm inflorescence can produce up to 1 litre of sap per day when tapped for toddy or palm sugar production. The sweet, mildly fragrant sap begins fermenting within hours of collection -- the race between sugar-maker and microbe happens every dawn in Southeast Asian palm groves.
